Un buen policial, una gran villana y un discutible determinismo genético

The One es una elegante serie inglesa que combina con desigual suerte el thriller policial, la ficción biotecnológica y el culebrón, destacándose en el primer aspecto y sobre todo por su protagonista Rebecca Webb, una genetista que es mucho más que una villana, muy bien interpretada por Hannah Ware.

The One es una empresa con sede en Londres que permite a sus clientes cruzar su información genética para encontrar a su “pareja ideal”. Está liderada por la ambiciosa genetista Rebecca Webb (Hannah Ware), quien esconde un suceso terrible de su pasado que vuelve a asediarla.

Combinación de ficción biotecnológica, thriller policial y culebrón, es en el segundo aspecto donde sobresale, relatando el asedio de una inspectora (Kate Saunders) sobre Rebecca para investigar su pasado, a partir del descubrimiento de un cadáver en el Támesis y donde mejor se resuelve la interacción entre los personajes.

En cuanto al aspecto biotecnológico, la serie plantea un discutible determinismo genético en cuanto a las elecciones afectivas de las personas, reduciéndolas a pulsiones que obedecen a factores bioquímicos (en consonancia con el actual auge de las neurociencias).

La narración se desarrolla en dos tiempos, uno de ellos integrado por flashbacks que ilustran la génesis del proyecto genético y del crimen. Las subtramas telenovelescas centradas en la vida privada de la detective, la de otra pareja y la de la propia Rebecca están destinadas a poner en acto los resultados del “match” genético, su incontenible efecto cuando las personas se conocen y algunas situaciones y dilemas que pueden plantearse en un mundo de vínculos pre The One. Algunas situaciones y conductas ponen a prueba el verosímil, llegando en ocasiones a rozar el ridículo.

The One es una serie elegante, sin grandes golpes de efecto, con su pata policial bien dosificada y, acaso, su principal atractivo sea el personaje de la gélida Rebecca Webb (que recuerda un poco a la bióloga de Biohackers), mucho más que una villana, que la bella Hannah Ware compone muy bien (con un gran manejo de lo corporal), con su ambición sin límites, su manejo de los vínculos y al mismo tiempo con su fragilidad.

A good crime, a great villain and a debatable genetic determinism

The One is an elegant English series that combines with uneven luck the police thriller, the biotechnological fiction and the soap opera, standing out in the first aspect and especially for its protagonist Rebecca Webb, a geneticist who is much more than a villain, very well interpreted by Hannah Ware.

The One is a London-based company that allows its clients to cross-match their genetic information to find their “ideal match.” It is led by the ambitious geneticist Rebecca Webb (Hannah Ware), who hides a terrible event from her past that comes back to haunt her.

Combination of biotechnological fiction, police thriller and soap opera, it is in the second aspect where it stands out, recounting the siege of a police inspector (Kate Saunders) on Rebecca to investigate her past, from the discovery of a corpse in the Thames and where it is best resolved the interaction between the characters.

Regarding the biotechnological aspect, the series poses a debatable genetic determinism in terms of people’s affective choices, reducing them to drives that obey biochemical factors (in line with the current boom in neurosciences).

The narrative unfolds in two stages, one of them made up of flashbacks that illustrate the genesis of the genetic project and the crime. The telenovelesque subplots focused on the private life of the detective, that of another couple and that of Rebecca herself are destined to put into action the results of the genetic match, its irrepressible effect when people meet and some situations and dilemmas that they can be considered in a world of pre-The One bonds. Some situations and behaviors put credibility to the test, sometimes bordering on ridicule.

The One is an elegant series, without great effects, with its well-dosed police leg and, perhaps, its main attraction is the character of the icy Rebecca Webb (who reminds a bit of the Biohackers biologist), much more than a villain, that the beautiful Hannah Ware composes very well (with a great handling of the corporal), with her limitless ambition, her handling of bonds and at the same time with her fragility.
