La cumbre de los dioses / The Summit of the Gods

Esta notable película de animación francesa, pero de estética japonesa es una ficción que aborda el mundo de los montañistas, transmite la pequeñez del ser humano frente a la inmensidad de las montañas y relata los constantes desafíos que se imponen los escaladores, poniendo en juego su vida, una vida literal y permanentemente cuesta arriba.

Makoto Fumagachi es un fotógrafo y periodista gráfico de Tokio que documenta los ascensos de las expediciones de montañistas profesionales. Estando en Nepal, toma conocimiento de la existencia de una cámara de fotos perteneciente a George Mallory, un escalador británico que formó parte de las tres primeras expediciones para escalar el Everest y que desapareció en la tercera (1924) sin saberse si había alcanzado la cima o no. Las fotos de la cámara podrían echar luz sobre esta duda. Por otro lado, dicha cámara estaría en poder de otro importante escalador (ficcional), Habu Joji, a quien Makoto intentará contactar y que se convertirá en el otro protagonista de la película.

La película del francés Patrick Imbert está basada en un manga y en una novela japoneses, y su gráfica es fiel a las animaciones de ese origen, sobre todo en el abordaje de la figura humana. Las imponentes imágenes de las montañas por momentos son de un realismo casi fotográfico.

Si bien su estructura temporal es interesante y la investigación periodística de Makoto tiene algo de thriller y contiene efectivas y tensas escenas durante los escalamientos, con sus contratiempos físicos y meteorológicos, La cumbre de los dioses es una película más de climas y de impresiones, con encuadres que enfatizan la pequeñez del ser humano frente a la inmensidad de las montañas y transmiten con efectividad la sensación de ascenso. Y, sobre todo, es una historia que incursiona en la psicología de los montañistas, quienes no sólo se imponen el desafío de llegar a las cumbres sino de volver a hacerlo por caminos más difíciles y en condiciones cada vez más adversas, sin darse por vencidos y poniendo en juego su vida, una vida permanente y literalmente cuesta arriba.

Makoto Fumagachi is a Tokyo photographer and photojournalist who documents the ascents of mountaineers. The French film Patrick Imbert is based on a Japanese manga and novel, and its graphics are faithful to the animations of that origin, especially in the approach to the human figure. The imposing images of the mountains are at times almost photographic realism.

Although its temporal structure is interesting and Makoto’s journalistic investigation has something of a thriller and contains effective and tense scenes during the escalations, with their physical and meteorological setbacks, The Summit of the Gods is one more film of climates and impressions, with frames that emphasize the smallness of the human being in the face of the immensity of the mountains and effectively convey the sensation of ascent. And, above all, it is a story that delves into the psychology of mountaineers, who not only set themselves the challenge of reaching the peaks but also of doing it again through more difficult roads and in increasingly adverse conditions, without giving up and putting his life at stake, a permanently and literally uphill life.
